Victoria Hotel, Atherton Rd, Hindley Green.
Started life as a beer house in the early 1860's, that means it did
not have a full license so could not sell wines and spirits.
Gained a full license in around 1869.

James Brooks was the owner and these where probably all his children. There was no TV in those days :-)
The Cow and Calves Hotel,
Leigh Rd, Hindley Green. opposite Hindley Hall. The site of the pub is now a small industrial estate. The pub is recorded in a directory of 1838 when Thomas Hampson was licensee. Later on it was called the Cow and Two Calves. In 1899 the then tenant, Thomas Topping was fined 40 shillings for permitting drunkenness. Despite its size the pub had a full license right up to extinction in 1937.
This small shop in Hindley Green was once the home of George Elliot who ran a day and night school in what was originally a weaving shop.
In September 1865 he lent his premises for use as a Sunday school by the newly formed bethel church. On the first day there was 155 attended.
